I compiled a tracklist + lyric snippets for the (very long) writing playlist I had for a fic WIP I completed over the summer. It's at my journal :)

I always find it fun to approach writing project-specific mixes differently than a general character/ship fanmix; I'm usually a bit looser with mood and genre, as it corresponds more to the arc of the story than just commenting on the canon themes/dynamics as they are, but hopefully also feels cohesive.

This one features a lot of stuff that sits at the interstice of where noise, metal, industrial, and experimental electronic music run up against folk and acoustic instrumentation. It's probably worth a listen if that's your jam whether or not you have further context.

The lyrics deal with violence and abuse, as well as sexually explicit content.

no fancy aesthetic title for this one because i couldn't think of one so it's exactly what it says on the tin lol. two unbalanced sides of k-pop remixes, by fans and then official! i recorded this so far just to minidisc, i wanted to include the somewhat obscure official momoland thumbs up remix but i couldn't fit it on the disc unfortunately (only 74 minutes available!). i also wanted to throw in a couple more faves like yunu in the house ditto remix and the rina sawayama remix of eve psyche by le sserafim but yeah, ran outta time. oh well! maybe i'll try to fit them on a longer tape.

i split these into two sides but obviously minidisc doesn't do sides like records or tape. it's just for like, organizational purposes when posting this i guess :P if i record this onto a 90 minute tape (which then of course i'll have more space for those remixes i couldn't fit in) i'll add a new picture and revised track listing!

i've been SUPER obsessed with XG and i adore their XG tape series, in which their rap members do solos or unit performances on existing beats with new lyrics, and the name had me going... why don't i put these on a tape? so i did that! and i ended up putting it on a mini disc too just to use my new sticker paper. i messed up the label a little but for my first go i'm pretty happy with it.

Technically this is a fanmix for the cdrama adaptation of Hikaru no Go, but as the show is set in the 2000s, it's also just... a nostalgia playlist. :P Did this back in 2020 and only just remembered it now!

Concept: Jiang Xueming and Gu Yu put together a mixtape. (Lots of S.H.E in this because I'm sure Mingming loves S.H.E.)

just an MD for this mix! haven't had the patience to record a tape lately and burning CDs has been reserved for friend mixes for now, even though i have plenty of blank CDs. i have a couple of these white MDs that i think are super cool and futuristic looking and i thought it'd be great for the summer.

at some point i do want to get sticker paper (might go and order that after making this post) so i can make and print the tiny labels for my MD mixes like lots of people do. i made a cute cover for this mix that, while basic, reflects the whole vibe quite well, so i really want to replace the temporary office label i've used here with a proper printed label of that cover.

My absolutely totally original super creative name: "내 레트로 밐스테이프을" (lit. "my retro mixtape" in korean)

no streaming link, sorry :( I don't have the files I used to make this anymore.

Basically just kpop songs I thought had a retro feel. Some because of their 80s-90s synth usage, others because of 60s-ish pop tropes. It was my first ever mixtape so it's all over the place haha. I'm definitely embarrassed of it, but wanted to share it anyway.

Found this while cleaning! It is both absolutely fantastic and a mess, made late-2003 or so?? at a the house of a friend of the family where I kinda lived sometimes. Just, a very interesting mix of stuff and the sequence of Tr. 13-16 is just wow. Alas, some of the OG game tracks are pretty muddy, and there's some clipping between tracks that happened during the burn. But overall, 12/10, would keep on repeat for a week. No clue if any of the video game remix stuff can even be dug up these days...

THE MINIDISC REVOLUTION IS UPON US

i have been obsessed with minidiscs for the past month. they're a dead format by sony that made optical discs tiny and put them in colorful floppy disk-like cartridges and the players fit in the palm of your hand and they're ADORABLE and FUTURISTIC and the BEST. you can learn more about them at the community-run minidisc wiki because i can't distill its history in just one post but it's very rich and interesting!

anyway my note for this mix over at illcocytus was "the centerpiece of this mix was lips by snsd and the percussion in it and then it morphed into this" so i hope that explains this mix well enough

circa 2001. I don't know how many of these survived, but when I had time, I'd make tapes from the station's CDs on their pre-recording equipment. (I mean, I did my work, too!) Since I was using professional equipment, the transitions are seamless and a little too good. I put it in my little player, hit play, sat down, and had forgotten it was a cassette within three songs. ^^;;

(I'm not sure whether or not to be impressed that at least a couple of my picks at the time are still radio staples.)

i was thinking on this and decided to go through with it: non playlist posts are allowed now, as long as they're either about playlists or about music in general! i really want to emphasize the DIY aspect of this community in making your own playlists and/or discs and tapes and whatever but i also want to encourage discussion instead of just popping in to share playlists and then dipping. so yeah!

to start things off, here's some tapes i got yesterday! 5 of them are from the german brand BASF, and are a 1993-94 model, cr ii studio, according to vintage cassettes. i'm very happy to have them! and the last tape is an extra that the store had lol, it's just a regular cheap TDK tape. i got these tapes at a record store local to me and the guy had them behind the counter after i asked about them, i got a good deal on them too! can't wait to fuck up these hi-fi german tapes with my dogshit low quality portable recorder lmao
